UFO tarts

Sandakan speciality:

(UFO from Kelly Bakery)

UFO, or ngau si dui (cow dung cake), or there might be some other names that you call it. We've talked about it here and here. Nothing comprehensive; have yet to really look for it - too busy, or
our timing are always off. There are quite a number of places offering this piece of delicacy. You can mostly find them at old coffee shops which sells breads, cakes and pastry items.

UFO cake/tarts or whatever you describe it is actually a thin piece of cake with some pastry cream on top and topped with meringue ( Egg whites ). The process is not as easy as it seems (or maybe it is) So it is somehow savoury and sweet at the same time. Soft and fluffy sponge cake with smooth pastry cream and light meringue. How great is that. Despite all the things I've said, I am unable to provide all the locations where this little jewel can be found, thus;I shall update on locations of UFO next time, or you can just ask us- we know some of them.

Never did I know that our own Sandakan only pastry managed to make it overseas. Yes, over sea. There is this lady selling UFO tarts in Singapore. For more information, head to her site =)

Kedai Kopi Yu Heng

Fact : Coto Makassar is traditional food from South Sulawesi - It is a stew made from the mixture of nuts and spices with beef parts or innards (intestines, tripes, livers, kidneys, lungs) which include beef brain and tongue.

However I never tried a Coto with beef brain and tongue..

Rumor says that the best Coto Makassar is available at the Town area. Hence, we went and tried it out. Kedai Kopi Yu Heng is situated opposite to Cherry Lane Records ( which sells VCD,CD,DVD and etc.) Near to Wisma Sandakan and it is sorta directly 'under' the Town Mosque ( Just because the mosque is sorta uphill)

(Please pardon lack of photography skills and photos are not up to par yet)

Mihun Coto Makassar Special
Consist of everything you can imagine in the stomach of a cow
a.k.a beef innards (intestines, tripes, livers, kidneys, lungs)

The much hype Coto Makassar at this shop is not really what I'd expect, unfortunately, I've tried better before and to be honest, the beef tripes (ngau pak yip) is not really cleaned. Thus, this somehow disgusted me as I personally love beef tripes. Soup wise, it is so-so to me.

Overall it is edible but not really enjoyable as I see things are not being prepared hygienically. My rating? 2 out 5.

Wing Hup Lee

Located in Mile 5 (well, i actually don't really know how to describe the directions but it is located among the first row of shops if you are driving to Taman Sibuga via the road from St. Monica Primary School)

^ I see egg tarts (their signature food)

But anyways, I also heard that it is famous for Har Mee (Prawn Mee) and that it is kinda thick/strong.. but unfortunately I only get to eat this the 3rd time I visited the shop because they only sell it on Sundays :( ..idk if they changed it to daily serving tho ~ let's hope so ^^

Har Mee

Unfortunately before I get to lay my hands chopsticks on it my friend was emphasizing about the thickness so I kinda put too high of an expectation on it..well, not as thick as what she described but actually it is not bad at all (and not spicy/hot/pedas for my standard which is like...not high, lol!)

But my previously failed plans to eat Har Mee allowed me to tried their Laksa which is not bad at all too!

Laksa

At least it is hotter/spicier than Har Mee

Signature Egg Tart:

We waited long enough for these because they were so so busy baking the first hundred egg tarts which are not for sale, they were prebooked TT

Anyways, I personally prefer Chung Ming Hing's ..This one is kinda thin crusted- really thin
but that's just me ^^;; hee

Familiar site?

Cafeteria Guan Huat

Used to be a stall at Town Market (Pasar) 2nd floor but they've moved to a new location. It is at mile 5, Taman Tshun Ngen entrance. Just next to Annie's Baking Studio, opposite the petrol station, in front of the huge..mansion..? (You will get the idea when you reached there)

I think they are famous with their ngau lam tai fun? They offer zha yuk also. I like their kon lou ngau lam zha yuk mee hoon. The sauce is somehow special? I just like it. Kinda bias here.

Kon Lou Ngau Lam Mee Hoon

Their mee hoon is not like those very thin mee hoon usually eaten? It's thicker.

Can someone tell me what is this thing in english? I think it's ngau pak yip in cantonese tho.

Zha Yuk

I like their sauce for the mee. I know they use star anise for it. Ok la, in general I like this kon lou ngau lam zha yuk . I think this shop do offer some other items. Not sure =p

Seoul Garden

Who would have thought that we have our own Korean Restaurant in Sandakan
It's quite hidden though..located next to the one and only standing cinema in Sandakan, same row with Hsiang Garden Restaurant/Hotel

^ Blurry picture..will try to take a better one next time x.x

As usual, koreans eat their food and rice with lots of side dishes
so no matter what dish you order you can still try their famous kimchi yay~

Clockwise: mini korean pancake, some sour pickled radish, bayam, kimchi, mini kimchi pancake, taugeh, ikan bilis, shrimps with long beans

Out of those 6 I really like both pancakes and the ikan bilis,

Kimchi 김치 - It's like the korean version of japanese wasabi- not the taste but in the sense that some people may not like it, but those who like it will love it..

It's definitely hot!

Mini kimchi pancake 김치전

One piece of an advice, these side dishes comes first so don't be greedy and eat ALL and get full before your main dishes come!

Fried korean noodles with vege and meat 잡채 - If you like sesame oil you will loove it

Korea pancake 파전 - very vege, it has carrot, chilli, spring onion, shrimps, etc~
If you didn't order it you can still try it as a side dish but the mini vers. is not as nice as this

HUGE...don't even attempt eating all unless you have 3-4 people (especially after eating all those side dishes x.x)

See...can't finish them

*EDITED with new ones*

Kimchi Pancake 김치전 - also as HUGE

If you can't finish this, dapao and eat it with instant noodles..yumm~

Marinated barbecued beef 불고기 - Usually you get to barbecue it yourself on the table but here they serve it readily barbecued for you..

I like it..it has that nice charcoal fragrant you experience while eating satay

Fried sotong... Not bad

And free watermelon~

Overall kinda worthy and VERY filling (the pancake is very very filling)
If you don't know what to order these few are what i would recommend, plus some other dishes that i will update next time

Come to think of it, korean food is very vege

Ps: the cook is a korean ^^

Syn Lok Bak Kut Teh

I've been too lazy and unmotivated to re-post this up but I saw the comment about bak kut teh so here I am TT

Just in case you don't know, Sandakan Bak Kut Teh is one unique Bak Kut Teh being pepper based instead of the normal unstimulating and no-omph chinese herb based Bak Kut Teh that can be found in any part of Malaysia......Personally, I prefer our Sandakan Bak Kut Teh - Siong Hei Si (please correct me if I got the location name wrong..I always get it confused with Nam Tung Si) WRONG! - It's in Nam Tung Si ^^;; thanks

Alternatively you may eat at the Mile 4 Indah if you stay nearer to there

This....is a MUST to eat Bak Kut Teh (at least for me!)

Spinach

Pork Mix - Some of you may not like it but it's recommended ^^ , you'll never know unless you try..be adventurous!

Forgot the name TT

Pork Balls/ Ju Yuk Yuen - RECOMMENDED

Pork Ribs

G-Burger

Located in Mile 4 Outside of Indah Jaya Happy Mart lies the famous non halal PORK burger

They have Original, Cheese, Satay, Double Decker, etc....

Cheese burger, tho you can't really see the cheese, it was under the meat

Worth trying i guess, how often do you come across pork (CHU)G-burger sold openly in Malaysia!?

The only problem is that we didn't have a chair to sit down and enjoy this TT

Sandakan Curry House

Located in Mile 4 Indah..just...drive around and find it yourself ^^;;

Teh Tarik Ping..I like my ping, it was a HOT day

Roti Canai

Or if you want an extra kick or aroma and fat get Roti Planta!

Opt for Roti Pisang if you want something sweet

This is really nice~~

Roti Tisu..I love the Tisu here the best of ALLLLL places, it's crunchy and you can eat it like a snack

I can only eat this much Roti but there are ALOT of Roti types available too

Besides Roti, their other dishes are also delicious

Something you can eat with your Roti - Curry Fish

You may even choose any curry displayed on the ..display thingy (idk what you call it!)

Nasi Goreng Kampung (This is the not-so-hot version I requested)

Raisin Rice with Curry Chicken and Tepe(?not too sure about the name) Tempeh

A closer look at the Tempeh (compressed and fermented soy beans)>>thanks to chongerin for the info!

^ These are actually ordered from the display thingy I was talking about too
